Recipe for these flatbreads is very simple and belongs to traditional Indian cuisine. Chapati is essentially Indian bread that is served with any meal. In India, it is mainly eaten with hands, dipping the flatbread into various sauces, purees, porridge, etc.
Whole Wheat Flour
1 2/3 cups (coarse grind)
Water
2/3 cup
Salt
1/2 tsp
Butter
for brushing flatbreads or vegetable oil
To prepare chapati, pour flour into a bowl, mix it with salt. Gradually add warm water and mix until the dough becomes soft.
Knead the dough for another 5 minutes. Then sprinkle it with water, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for about 30 minutes. The surface of the dough should not dry out.
With wet hands, knead the dough again, roll it into a log shape, and divide it into 15 portions.
Roll out each portion (adding flour) into a thin disk about 4-5 inches in diameter. Fry the flatbreads on both sides in a well-heated dry skillet with a thick bottom. The flatbreads will puff up with air bubbles on the skillet.
Occasionally, remove any burnt flour from the skillet to prevent the flatbreads from becoming dark.
Slightly press the cooked flatbread to release any air, brush with melted butter. Chapati is ready to be served!
